The 3800 class fast passenger locomotives were the epitome of modern
New South Wales power. They were built in the 1940's with weld fabricated
saddles and cylinders.
Two are currently
operating, 3801 and 3830. 3801 is streamlined, 3830 is not, providing an
interesting comparison.
3801 is run by the 3801 company which also operates the Cockatoo Train
excursions. 3830 is operated by 3801 but owned by the Powerhouse Museum
in Sydney. 3830 was in primer making shakedown runs during my visit. She
suffered from a blow in her right side which was a missing rivet in her
built up piston, and I was fortunate enough to assist in her repairs in
3801 shops at Eveleigh.
This company does everything in a first class manner, including making Yank steam engineers feel at home. Many thanks to Royce Jowett, Chris and the office staff, the whole train crew, and the West Coast Rail officers with whom I shared lunch, train chasing, and a memorable trip. Fastest I have ever ridden on the footplate. Also thanks to the shop crew at Eveleigh (all master mechanics seem to be bearded curmudgeons) who made an ignorant Yank welcome to pitch in and help out, and learn a lot about different ways things are done down under. I wish I could have stayed a week and learned a whole lot more.
